Father’s Day

I Miss You Dad!

The Christian Evangelist Rev. Billy Graham said:

“A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.”

History and Background of Father’ Day:

The idea for creating a day for children to honor their fathers began in Spokane, Washington. A woman by the name of Sonora Smart Dodd thought of the idea for Father’s Day while listening to a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909.

Having been raised by her father, William Jackson Smart, after her mother died, Sonora wanted her father to know how special he was to her. It was her father that made all the parental sacrifices and was, in the eyes of his daughter, a courageous, selfless, and loving man. Sonora’s father was born in June, so she chose to hold the first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane, Washington on the 19th of June, 1910.

In 1926, a National Father’s Day Committee was formed in New York City. Father’s Day was recognized by a Joint Resolution of Congress in 1956. In 1972, President Richard Nixon established a permanent national observance of Father’s Day to be held on the third Sunday of June. So Father’s Day was born in memory and gratitude by a daughter who thought that her father and all good fathers should be honored with a special day just like we honor our mothers on Mother’s Day.

Poem by an Unknown Author:

What Makes A Dad

God took the strength of a mountain,
The majesty of a tree,
The warmth of a summer sun,
The calm of a quiet sea,
The generous soul of nature,
The comforting arm of night,
The wisdom of the ages,
The power of the eagle’s flight,
The joy of a morning in spring,
The faith of a mustard seed,
The patience of eternity,
The depth of a family need,
Then God combined these qualities,
When there was nothing more to add,
He knew His masterpiece was complete,
And so, He called it … Dad

Scriptures Just for Dad:

1 Chronicles 29:17
I know, my God, that you test the heart and are pleased with integrity … (NIV)
Deuteronomy 1:29-31
Then I said to you, “Do not be terrified; do not be afraid of them. The LORD your God, who is going before you, will fight for you, as he did for you in Egypt, before your very eyes, and in the desert. There you saw how the LORD your God carried you, as a father carries his son, all the way you went until you reached this place.” (NIV)
Joshua 1:9
…Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go. (NIV)
Malachi 4:6
He will turn the hearts of the fathers to their children, and the hearts of the children to their fathers; or else I will come and strike the land with a curse. (NIV)
Psalm 103:13
As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; (NIV)
Proverbs 3:11-12
My son, do not despise the LORD’s discipline
and do not resent his rebuke,
because the LORD disciplines those he loves,
as a father the son he delights in.

Proverbs 3:32
For the LORD detests a perverse man
but takes the upright into his confidence.

Proverbs 10:9
The man of integrity walks securely,
but he who takes crooked paths will be found out.

Proverbs 17:24
A discerning man keeps wisdom in view,
but a fool’s eyes wander to the ends of the earth.

Proverbs 17:27
A man of knowledge uses words with restraint,
and a man of understanding is even-tempered.

Proverbs 23:22
Listen to your father, who gave you life,
and do not despise your mother when she is old.

Proverbs 23:24
The father of a righteous man has great joy;
he who has a wise son delights in him.

Ephesians 6:4
Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. (NIV)

Colossians 3:21
Fathers, do not embitter your children, or they will become discouraged. (NIV)

Gulf State Park Campground, Gulf Shores, Alabama

Gulf State Park, AL

Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama was our Memorial Day 2008 celebration camping destination.  The campground has almost 500 campsites with full hook-ups and beautiful concrete pads.  This campground was totally destroyed during Hurricane Ivan in September of 2004 that swept through the Orange Beach and Gulf Shores area.  The campground was “full” over the Memorial holiday.  The temps were in the low to mid 90’s and all campsites were in the direct sunlight because Ivan destroyed all of the trees.  The camp store was destroyed and has not yet been built back.  Still the campground is well-kept with brand new bathhouses.

We attended Sunday worship services at the activities center at 10:30 AM.  The services were conducted by the North American Mission Board Resort Missionaries.  We really enjoyed the worship experience.

Gulf State Park Campground contains Lake Shelby and Middle Lake.  The campground is along the Gulf of Mexico.  Cell phone and television coverage was perfect.  GreatOutdoorBlessings star rating out of 5 ***** is a  5*****

Gulf Islands National Seashore, Davis Bayou Campground – Ocean Springs, MS

Davis Bayou Campground is located in Ocean Springs, MS on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The campground is adjacent to a saltwater marsh.  Hurricane Katrina was devastating to the campground.  A variety of trees, including live oaks show the ill effects of Katrina.  There are 52 sites and all sites have water and electricity including 50 amp service.  There is a central dump station and no sewer at the campsite.  Reservations are not accepted.  Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

The campground reopened last summer of 2007 recovering from Katrina.  FEMA trailers occupied the campground and have now been removed.  The campground is now in full operation but campers are unaware that it is open and non-FEMA occupied.  Camping fees are $16 and $8 (Sr.s) per night.  Cell phones work extremely well.  Only problem is no sewage hook-ups.  GreatOutdoorBlessings star rating out of 5 ***** is a  4****

SOUL Food – The Most Important Recipe Ever!

written by John and Rita Williams

This is the most important recipe that you will find anywhere.  It has specific guidelines and must be followed step by step.  This recipe is over two-thousand years old.  It was and is today a recipe that will change your life right before your eyes.  It is not grilled, not fried, not baked, not broiled and not heated.  As a matter of fact it comes with a special “fire insurance policy” guaranteeing it will not burn.  The ingredients have been carefully measured and mixed according to a plan.  When preparing be very careful to add the exact amount and believe in your heart that the final result will be “heavenly”.  You will want to share this recipe with all of your friends and family.

It’s easy so let’s get started!

1 tablespoon of “Admission of Sin”, 1 cup of “Cannot Save Myself”, 1 cup of “Died on a Cross”, 1 tablespoonful of “Payment of my Sin-Debt”, 1 teaspoon of “Rose from the Grave”, 1 cup of “Repentance”, 1 cup of “I Ask you to Live in My Heart”, 1 large serving of “Jesus, Son of GOD”, 1 quart of “Salvation”.

1 cup of “Love”, 1 cup of “Joy”, 1 cup of “Peace”, 1 cup of “Patience”, 1 cup of “Kindness”, 1 cup of “Goodness”, and 1 cup of “Faithfulness”.

Combine “Admit that you are a Sinner” with the fact that “You cannot Save Yourself”.  Slowly add that you know that “Jesus died on a Cross” and sprinkle in “For Payment of my SIn-Debt”.  Pour in that you believe that Jesus “Rose from the Grave” three days later and stir in slowly your “Repentance” of sin and that you are asking Jesus “to Live within your Heart”.  Lastly, cover with a big thank you to “Jesus, the Son of GOD” for giving you eternal “Salvation”.

Mix in your heart all of the fruit of the spirit that you have before you.  Stir and Mix “Love”, “Joy”, “Peace”, “Patience”, “Kindness”, “Goodness” and “Faithfulness”.  Serve with your Salvation and your new and fresh walk with GOD the Father, GOD the Son, and GOD the Holy Spirit.

Share this Recipe for Eternal Life with your family and friends!

Servings:  All mankind

Prep Time:  Eternally

Roosevelt State Park – Morton, MS

Roosevelt State Park conveniently located between Meridian and Jackson, Mississippi, offers an abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities in a picturesque setting. The park’s scenic overlook provides a panoramic view of the Bienville National Forest. The gently sloping landscape is particularly striking during the fall, when the forest is bright with autumn colors.

109 sites are available for RV camping, featuring picnic tables, and grills. 28 sites include electrical and water hook-ups and 81 sites have electrical, water and sewer hook-ups. All of the RV pads are within easy access of a central sewage dumping station and a bathhouse with hot showers.
All sites are available for reservations.  A wooded area on the upper end of Shadow Lake is available for tent camping. Water is available in the area, and bathhouses featuring hot showers are located just across the dam from the primitive camping area.  Roosevelt is beautiful in the fall when the leaves change colors and the temperature is in the 60’s.

God Gives Believers (Just Like David) Five Smooth Stones

A summary of one of my favorite sermon messages appeared in The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, TN  on June 6, 1992.  I have carried a copy of this message in my Bible for the past 16 years.  The sermon, “God’s Select and Courageous Army”  was delivered by Pastor J.S. Ray of All Believers Faith Center in Memphis, Tennessee.  I want to share this message with you!

After the Crucifixion, the followers of Jesus were devastated, disappointed and in despair.  After the Resurrection and the appearance of our Lord to His followers, a quiet assurance that He is alive began to take over their spirits.  This assurance empowered them!  They were ready to continue His work.

They were weak, fearful and unlearned in their own power, but in Him they were to become conquering warriors.  They were the army of God, armed and dangerous, as He trained and directed them from victory to victory over sin, sickness, oppression or any attack from the enemy.

As a local church, we are there to reach into our community and our nation.  We are here as a beacon to bring about a change.  We can and will, if we give ourselves to Him, submit to His training and direction. We are the army of God.  We are accountable for  changing the environment in which we operate.  We must win others to the Kingdom.

God will take the weak and make them strong.  He is a great change-master.  God chose and anointed David, and David defeated Goliath.  David knew no weapon formed against him would prosper.  You, too, must know and operate in that knowledge.

God chooses those who will hear and obey.  They are willing to give up personal interest and opt for Divine direction in every area of their lives.  Until we reach this point of yielding our desires, we are not ready for the army of God.  We will not make good soldiers.

As an army, we must extend the territory of the Lord.  We must go and bring the drug addict, sinner, prostitute, the lonely…..As we gather wisdom and knowledge, our debts become fewer and fewer, our discontent is not as severe as it once was and our despair begins to lift.  We’re working with the change-master!

David used five smooth stones to slay the giant.  We, too, have five smooth stones.  These stones will defeat any enemy.  Our sling must be FAITH.  Here are our five stones:                                                        Our first stone against any enemy is the NAME OF JESUS – use the name often!                                                 Our second stone is the WORD – use the Word.  Know what’s written in the Bible and where.                            Our third stone is the BLOOD – the Blood of the Lamb, Jesus, will cleanse you.                                                  Our fourth stone is the HOLY SPIRIT .  Be filled with the Spirit and overcome the enemy.                                   Our fifth stone is PRAISE AND WORSHIP  – know the power of praise, the necessity of worship.

Take your weapons, wind them in the sling of faith, and let go!  The giant will fall – you will take his head and have it to show.  Take aim at drugs, sin, debt or anything that keeps you in bondage.  LET YOUR WEAPONS DEFEAT YOUR GOLIATH.
